2018 Development Update

Hello StaffPadders!

It's been a long time since I updated the blog, and I know some of you have been wondering what's been happening with the development of app, and how we're progressing towards that fabled "mega-update" that I hinted at last year.

Well, in short, we're progressing really well. We still have some more work to do. What we're up to is mind-bogglingly complicated, and I have to occasionally step back and take stock of what we've managed to achieve over the past year and a half. Although 18 months in internet-land feels like an awfully long time, the amount of work and passion going in behind the scenes is really quite tremendous.

Part of the reason for extending the development timeline from the original estimate is that we have a unique opportunity to rewrite the core foundations with the entire "vision" fully in mind, which I talked about briefly in the previous blog post. This is extremely exciting - a technical marvel - and I still giggle like a little schoolboy out of disbelief when I'm using the development versions. I'm looking forward to being able to share some news of this revolution in the near future.

As we got further into the crucial structural improvements required to achieve that next-step vision, we realised that the time was right to rewrite a lot of the original core fundamental architecture that the app was based on, rather than plough on with the existing codebase and struggle to add features or fix issues in the future. Additionally, there's been a lot of advancement in the device and tablet world since we started development of StaffPad back in 2012, and it makes sense to write for and utilise all of that advancement.

Of course, doing all of this proved a lot more work than originally expected, but the good news is that we're almost done. The new foundations are much stronger and smarter now, and will enable the app to work faster, harder and more intelligently than ever before for many years to come. I do think the extra effort and time we're spending on the update will be worth it. StaffPad is a vanguard example of a truly "modern" app; a showcase of what can be done when you think a little bit differently. We intend for it to stay this way!

Thanks so much for your patience during this big development push. I realise that it may seem that we're not continuing development on the app, when in fact nothing could be further from the truth. I'm not a believer in spoiling surprises or revealing what we're up to before it's ready to show and be enjoyed by all. However, rest assured that we're still here, we're working hard on the next update, and we think you're going to love it.

In the meantime, we hope you continue to enjoy making music with StaffPad!

Best wishes,
David & Matt
